Video games in preschool years

Let’s talk about video games designed, developed, and created for preschool-aged children. We’re sharing four case histories from our video games, along with a brief analysis of who our target audience is and what they look for in a video game. Enjoy the read!

Who are the players of video games developed by Dinobros?

Potentially everyone—adults, children, Boomers, Gen Z, and Digital Natives—we are able to make truly anyone play, but in this article we want to talk to you about a category of players for whom we have created video games for various clients, preschool children.

Who preschool gamers are and how they play.

Official data, to date, on gamers in Italy starts with the 6–10 age group, which includes 1.7 million boys and girls. The preschool age group, on the other hand, is not covered by statistical data but represents a segment of great interest for those who develop and create video games, and even more so for those who provide spaces and services dedicated to this segment, which necessarily also involves the parent age group, which we can place between 25–34 and 34–44 years old.

When preschool children play.

The key feature of video games intended for preschool children is accessibility and ease of use. Wherever there is a situation of long waiting and boredom for the child, the video game is certainly a valuable support to entertain the little one under the constant supervision of the parent, who will still need to take care of accessing the portal and choosing the video game that best matches their child, both by age and play style.

What games are for the preschool age group.

The video games we have created for a preschool-age target are of different types, but they are all characterized by simple mechanics and colors that reflect the client’s brand.

Here we want to show you four types of video games that we created with pixel art graphics and with 2D and 3D graphics.

“Jump, Jump, Jump,” the video game for Cartoonito’s preschool children.

Featured on the home page of the games section of the website and app of the children’s TV channel Cartoonito, the first video game we’re talking about is “Jump, Jump, Jump.”

The video game was created entirely in pixel art, stars the channel’s mascots, and thanks to very simple mechanics is easily playable by a very young audience with complete peace of mind for parents.

From defined colors to the essential style, the video game is suited to being played by a very young children’s audience, limiting stimuli to the essentials of the gameplay, which consists of jumping from one platform to another upward, collecting points.

“Il Complemago,” the video game dedicated to Cartoonito’s show.

Another video game created for the website and app of the children’s TV channel Cartoonito is “Il Complemago,” a video game that draws from the show loved by children in its colors and in the game’s home page, where gifts are activated each time a game level is completed. The game mechanics are always the same across all levels, in which the player must help the Wizard direct the colored sphere toward the group of spheres of the same color to make them explode.

Also in this case, it was created entirely in pixel art with simple mechanics; repetition and brand-referencing colors are a reassuring element for young players and for their parents.

“Pinocchio and Friends - Ready, Set, Fly!” the 2D and 3D video game for children.

Pinocchio and Friends - Ready, Set, Fly!” is one of the video games created for the children’s portal “Pinocchio & Friends.” This video game created with 2D and 3D graphics features Pinocchio and Frida in an adventure aboard an airplane.

The young player must avoid obstacles and collect points during the flight.

A simple and intuitive mechanic associated with reassuring graphics are key elements in the success of a video game created for a portal dedicated exclusively to entertaining young children.

“Summer & Todd Happy Farmers - The Fruit Hunt!”, a video game for preschool children.

The video game “S&T - The Fruit Hunt!” was created for the children’s website “Summer & Todd Happy Farmers.” The video game was developed with an endless racing game mechanic in which the character must jump obstacles and collect points through fruit baskets.

The 2D and 3D graphics use the website’s main characters as protagonists of a simple and intuitive video game. The young player simply has to click to make the protagonist jump.

We have shown you four examples of video games created and designed for a preschool target. There are many mechanics we can develop for this target and many graphics we can propose. We are ready for a new adventure—are you?
